I want to avoid anything that could be considered plagiarism, but my thoughts have been running along such a similar path , I may fail. Here goes,
Years ago I took a couple psychology classes at college. I admit I know very little about this field of study, but there was one concept that I learned in those classes, that made great sense and has stuck with me all these years. In fact, I believe it so important I spent some time with my daughters explaining how it works and how to recognize it. The story I told them is this,
20 years or so ago a couple of managers I worked with were in constant conflict with me. They accused me of things that I did not do, that in fact I would not even think of doing. At near the top of their voices they accused me of being hostile. Even though they would walk by without saying hello, I was rude.
Now these managers and I had significant disagreements over the direction of our business, but those disagreements should not have manifested themselves in personal attacks. Yet, it did and I did not cause it. Trust me, I spend many hours examing my behavior, my words, my gestures in order to determine if I could be at fault. I kept trying to improve relationships and would constantly believe I had, but the charges and attacks would start again. While not being the easiest person to get along with at times, I am almost always polite, particularly towards women and would die of embarrassment if I had done the things of which I was accused.
Eventually I figured out that they were projecting the behavior they engaged in or would (and this is important) engage in if they could or had as much authority as me. Projection, I told my daughters, is the psychological concept I learned years ago and it very often explains why one observes Person A making outrageous claims and statements about Person B.
This is what is happening to Sarah Palin. The left is projecting their evil, their vice, their doubts, their actions onto her. "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Matthew 7:3.
Robin in her article notes that this behavior is caused by jealousy. I prefer to consider it the sin of envy. The left is envious of Sarah on so many levels it is funny. Let’s count some of the ways, her good looks, her energy, her ability to articulate and connect with millions, her family, her husband, her fearlessness, her clear and obvious goodness and her lack of doubt. Heck, they are probably envious that she is making so much money. All this from a girl out of the (really) backwoods of Alaska without a real degree from a real university. I can’t count how many times I have heard or read of Sarah being called dumb, stupid, not very bright, and so forth. Often when hearing people say she is dumb or whatever, I will say: be careful she reminds me of my mother. (See that is how conservatives attempt to defuse a situation, with humor.) One fellow, who I respect a great deal, once responded, your mother is smarter. I wish I had replied, that may be, but she didn’t have Sarah’s fearlessness nor do you. I will reply that way in the future.
Mortal sins matter. Unconfessed (meaning unrecognized for you Prods and non Christians) they affect the soul which affects behavior by destroying grace and serenity. Dr. Victor does a fabulous job of pointing out examples where those on the left have done exactly what Sarah is accused of. Other articles the past few weeks have pointed out who really engages inflammatory rhetoric. Here’s a hint, it isn’t Sarah yet it is she who is accused.
I previously said the attacks were funny and in a way they are, yet no man can allow his honor to be attacked and destroyed by lies and falsehoods. For too long conservatives allowed the left to do that, after all we do believe in turning the other cheek, but not Sarah, come after her and she comes after you. Good. Those two managers learned a long time ago, that you come after me and you will pay, eventually. We need more like Sarah in public life.
We may also need to bring back dueling, then the ground will get dark and bloody around here.
