How are you? We had frost this morning. Won’t be long till rabbit time. Guess you are planning on stacking them up this year. I would like to tell you a man who went hunting about 1902. His name was Ollie Frezzell. He lived over on the Mississippi River and he was a truthful man.
Back in those days we had 20 to 1 more rabbits than we have now. That year it rained a lot and the river began to rise. There was an island close to where Ollie lived around 40 or 50 acres big. Water kept rising until there was only about 1 acre that was not covered. So he decided to go over there hunting. So he got his boat, gun and dog and went. When he landed he said he never saw as many rabbits. That place was covered with them. The dog jumped out of the boat and began to catch them. The rabbits would jump in the water and dog would catch them on two or three jumps. He shot one and laid his gun down and got a stick. He said there was an old tree that had fallen down about midway on what ground was not covered and it had a hole in about 4 feet up. The dog run a rabbit in it so he went to it and it was jammed full. He said he could reach rabbits with his hands. He got seven rabbits and two opossums the first time out of it. Him and his dog would chase the rabbits and soon the tree would be full again. He said they run the rabbits until him and the dog both give out. The dog laid down he was so give out that Ollie had to lift him in the boat. He said they chased them at least two hours. After picking them up and putting them in the boat and counting them, him and the dog had caught 110. So he rowed back to Wickliffe and got a man with a one horse wagon to haul them to the top of the hill to a store and the storekeeper give him 10 cents each for each rabbit. Back in those days you could sell quail and rabbits and there was no limit on how many you could kill. The storekeeper would ship them on trains north. But Shane that has been a long time ago. I was just a little boy.
